ABSTRACT

This paper seeks to do an exploratory analysis of the changes observed in the hotel sector in three cities in three different countries and continents. Joining information from official databases, direct survey in hotels and hotel websites, and interviews with industry representatives, an inventory and analysis of the changes observed in hotel supply in Lisbon (Portugal), Maputo (Mozambique) and Sao Paulo (Brazil) throughout 2020 and 2021 is made. Results show that suspension of activity, with temporary closure during the most critical periods of the pandemic, and partial reduction of supply to reduce operational costs, were the most common strategies followed by hotels in the three cities, with consequences in job losses. Other changes of a more structural nature, such as rebranding processes and permanent closure of hotels found significant variations among the cities studied. The adoption of different policy measures in the various countries and their varying exposure to international tourism explain partly these differences.

ABSTRACT

This article aims to discuss forms and nature of tourism during the Covid-19 pandemic with empirical reference to the state of Sao Paulo. To this end bibliographic research on national and international literature on tourism and pandemic, were taken among with large-circulation media survey on tourism narratives over the period, and use of the collected data between 2020 and 2021by the Tourism Research Group in Times of Pandemic: a Multi and Trans-Scale Analysis under the lead of the University of Sao Paulo. We assume that there are nuances of current tourism practice that fit pandemic times - including by the restrictions on mobility imposed by sanitary protocols - such as reducing air travel and consequently long-distance travel or the motivational prevalence related to rest at the expense of the yearning for the unknown and for discovering new places. However, on the other hand, others remain operating a well-known pre-pandemic pattern and leisure travels for those in the social conditions to do so have also continued to happen. This allows us to think about the meanings - imagined, desired and real of the so-called "pandemic tourism" demostrations discussing travelers' stances, publicly constructed narratives and from there, possible developments in the practice of tourism.

ABSTRACT

This article is based on the recognition that there is an imbricated relationship between urbanization, metropolization and tourism, which, therefore, guides the analysis about the consequences of the pandemic of COVID-19 on the tourism of Sao Paulo and Baixada Santista. More than simply reflecting on the amounts involved, it seeks to qualify the debate beyond a supposed cause and effect relationship, considering the complexity underlying the theme and the case studies. Assuming that the urban context between Sao Paulo and Baixada Santista has many parallels in Brazil and in the world, this study contributes to the understanding of the phenomenon of tourism in complex metropolitan dynamics. The development of certain practices under the umbrella of "pandemic tourism" indicates an accommodation in the narrative and dynamics of tourism today, despite the seriousness and uncertainties about the consequences of the pandemic.
